Hockey and the War. The Wairarapa Men’s Hockey Association in its annual report states:' —Today the slogan is “Your Country Needs You.” What effect this will have on men's hockey remains to be seen, but whatever the result we can confidently assert that the Empire contains no supporters more loyal than those who wield the stick. Trampers Marooned. Returning from their Easter holiday 24 hours late, a party of 60 Wellington trampers who were marooned on Kapiti Island by the high seas on Monday arrived back at Wellington last night. Even yesterday they were able to return to the mainland only with difficulty. They included members of the Hutt Valley, Varsity, R’tcsae and Outdoor tramping clubs.
Price Control Criticised. A statement made by the New Zealand Federation of Drapers. Clothiers, and Boot Retailers to the Price Investigation Tribunal declares that large groups of merchandise are being sold at prices that cannot, but result in a loss to the retailer, but the time has arrived when all businesses must face the issue of a just mark-up or go out of business. The statement was made in conjunction with a summary of the financials position of the drapery and allied trades prepared by Mr J. L. Hay. It was based on information derived from a statistical report of 28 representative companies; the present trading position in New Zealand was reviewed and an appeal was made for a relaxation of the methods of the Price Tribunal in granting increases of prices.
“I confidently believe that it will not be very long before all the weight and sting has been taken out of these night bombing attacks.” —Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding.
