SIXTEEN CASUALTIES
AIRMEN AND EXPEDITIONARY FORCE LARGEST LIST ISSUED SINCE WAR BEGAN. MANY REPORTED MISSING.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The longest casualty list released in New Zealand since the outbreak of war was issued yesterday. It contains the names of 13 New Zealand airmen and three members of the second New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas. Of the airmen nine have been reported missing on operations. The list is as follows: —
Sergeant Joseph Lewis McNamara. R.N.Z.A.F., missing on operations. Father: Mr P. McNamara. Arapuni Road, Putaruru. Sergeant David Leslie Jones, R.N.Z.A.F., missing on operations. Father: Mr F. D. .Tones. 99 Buchanans Road, Sockburn. Sergeant Cristen Stewart Greager, R.N.Z.A.F., missing on operations. Father: Mr P. C. Greager, 71 Dublin Street, Wanganui. Pilot Officer Leonard Stewart Dunley, R.N.Z.A.F., missing on operations. Mother: Mrs F. S. Manson. 5 Westminster Flats, Brooklyn, Wellington.
Sergeant Kenneth Manson, R.N.Z.A.F., missing on operations. Foster father: Mr Carter, 128 Willis Street, East Ashburton. Pilot Officer John Alastair Graham, R.N.Z.A.F., missing on operations. Father: Mi- John Graham. Netherby, Hastings. Sergeant John Herbert Allen, R.N.Z.A.F., killed. flying accident. Father: Major W. H. Allen. Hamilton. . Sergeant Albert Douglas Wood, R.N.Z.A.F., killed, flying accident. Mother: Mrs V. M. Wood, 257 Awaroa Road. Helensville. Sergeant Harold Lagor Beach, R.N.Z.A.F., killed during operational flight. Mother: Mrs E. A. Beach. Pakowhai Road. Hastings. Sergeant Cyril Edgar Donehue, R.N.Z.A.F., previously reported missing. now reported missing, believed killed in action. Father: Mr James Donehue. Temuka. Sergeant James Clark Cattell, R.N.Z.A.F., missing on operations. Mother: Mrs M. E. Cattell, 43 Messines Road, Karori. Pilot Officer Gilbert Theodore Kimberley, R.N.Z.A.F., missing on opera-! lions. Father: Mr O. J. Kimberley, All Saints’ Vicarage, Nelson. Flying Officer Lawrence David Loasby, R.A.F., missing on operations. Mother: Mrs Olive Loasby. High Street, Carterton.
N.Z.E.F. Casualties. Private Isaac Cyril Osborne, N.Z.A.S.C., accidentally killed. Mother: Mrs M. J. Osborne, Wolfe Street, Whangarei. Gunner John Andrew Carney, N.Z.A., died of sickness. Mother: Mrs Mary Carney, 41 Ham Road, Riccarton, Christchurch. Private Maurice Hennessy, N.Z.A.S.C., wounded. Sister: Mrs Annie Calder, 62 Tinakori Road, Wellington. NAMES CONFUSED. AUCKLAND, April 14. “I am glad to inform you that your son is safe and well.” was the text of a cablegram received today bj' Mr C. Smith, Remuera. whose son. Sergeant Smith. R.N.Z.A.F.. was previously, reported missing on air operations in-the Middle East.
The cable explained that because of an error in the transmission of the message from the squadron concerned Sergeant Smith was confused with another airman of‘the same name. Regret was expressed at the unnecessary grief which might have been caused.
