ALLIED FRONT

DESCRIBED AS POWERFUL WALL NAZIS CHECKED IN EARLY ENCOUNTERS. YUGOSLAV WITHDRAWAL TO MOUNTAINS/ (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, April 13. There was restricted patrol activity early this morning in northern Greece, where German armoured columns have come in contact with the central front. The British command in Athens had announced that the first enemy contact with the British Imperial forces was made on Thursday. The Athens radio describes the front as a powerful wall against which the Germans will have to give battle. It states that wherever the Nazis have come up against Greek resistance they have been checked.

Royal Air Force bombers and fighters continue to strike fierce blows at the Germans, bombing and machinegunning bridges, roads and tunnels along the whole line of the march toward the British and Greek forces. The Moscow radio says the Greeks in Fort Rupel, north of Salonika, are still holding out. There is little reliable news of the land operations in Yugoslavia. The Germans are still advancing northward from Nish toward Belgrade. Italian troops appear to be operating in the extreme north-west and Hungarians in the north-east. A report from Ankara says the main Yugoslav forces have withdrawn intact to the mountains, where they will be able to hold out as long as supplies reach them from the Dalmatian coast. Another report mentions a counter-attack by Yugoslavs. The Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister, M. Vyshinski, has informed the Hungarian Minister in Moscow that his Government disapproves of Hungary’s war with Yugoslavia only four months after the signing of a treaty of friendship with that country.
