HONOURS AT BRISTOL
DEGREES FOR MR MENZIES & MR WINANT CONFERRED BY BRITISH PRIME MINISTER.' VISITS TO BOMBED AREAS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY'. April 12. With time-honoured ceremony in Bristol’s battle-scarred university, -the Prime Minister, Mr Churchill, who is Chancellor of the university, today invested the American Ambassador, Mr Winant, and the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, with honorary degrees of doctors of law. A similar degree was conferred in his absence on Dr. Conant, of Harvard University. In spite of the raid last night a great crowd assembled to greet Mr Churchill, who said: “It is indeed marvellous that Australia and New Zealand, separated from us by vast ocean spaces, should send their manhood and scatter their wealth under no law or constitution, bond or treaty and with a thoroughness and efficiency which is not to be gained by the harsh, rigid methods upon which other empires have been constructed. The Australian and New Zealand troops may be in contact with the enemy today in the classic land of Greece, fighting with the sons of Britain and playing an important part in the universal drama.” In Bristol today, Mr Churchill continued, were the scars of a new attack on the city. Many of those present had been all night at their posts and under the fire of the enemy in a heavy, protracted bombardment. Yet they had assembled with a fortitude and detachment worthy of the pages of classical history. Mr Churchill had toured the bombed areas before proceeding to the ceremony at the university. CHEERS IN CARDIFF. Accompanied by Mr Winant, Mi" Churchill visited Cardiff today, where they made a tour of the badly bombed residential areas of the city. Mr Churchill drove through the streets in an old open motor-car which had been acquired second-hand for driving firefighters about. Everywhere Mr Churchill was greeted with loud cheers and cries of “Good old Winnie.” At one point he shouted, “Are we downhearted?” and the crowd replied with a thunderous “No.”
