Completed five months ahead of schedule, the mighty United States battleship North Carolina was commissioned in a Brooklyn navy yard. The North Carolina is described as the world’s deadliest and mightiest warship afloat.- It is claimed that she can shoot farther, faster and harder than any other battleship in the world. The North Carolina is of 35,000 tons, has nine 16-inch guns, can throw 10 tons of shells a minute at a target 20 miles distant.

The North Carolina is one of a class of six ships. She was laid down in October, 1937, and her sister, the Washington, in June, 1938. A third, the South Dakota, was-begun on July, 1939, for completion in 1943, and the other three (Alabama, Indiana and Massachusetts) were contracted for at the end of 1938.
