IN THE GARDEN

HINTS FOR THE AMATEUR ■ Frail, Flowers and Vegetables WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Earth-up celery and leeks as required; choose a time when soil and plants are both dry. Dig over vacant plots and destroy all rubbish likely to be a harbour for pestg. Sow green manuring crops for digging in later. Sow cabbage and cauliflower (early varieties), lettuce, short carrots, prickly spinach and turnips. Sow onions for transplanting later; if the soil is likely to be wet sow on raised beds. Collect and store pumpkins and marrows when they are fully ripe; dry well before storing. FLOWER GARDEN. Chrysanthemums need regular feeding now that the buds are swelling; attend to the disbudding and tying up. Clean up beds and borders of plants that have finished their season to make way for subjects to flower in spring. Sow down new lawns and give old ones a top-dressing of a good fertiliser. Continue the planting of bulbs, anemones and ranunculus for spring flowering. Sow hardy annuals for filling vacant spaces in the borders. Plant out Iceland poppies, pansies, violas, calendulas and other annuals raised in boxes. FRUIT GARDEN. Lime is necessary for stone fruit trees, and should be applied at this season. Fruit already in store should be looked over and decaying specimens removed. Unfruitful but vigorous trees can be improved by root pruning. Cut out dead and diseased wood and burn it at once; cleanliness now in the orchard will reduce the incidence of disease next season.
