EKETAHUNA BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH. FINNANCIAL POSITION OUTLINED (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council was held last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr W. Olsen), Crs M. W. Priest, D. D. Ryan, E. M. Simmers, K. Marenzi and P. S. Page. The Town Clerk (Mr B. Dinnan) reported on the finances as follows:— District fund account, cr £492 Is sd; Domain acount, cr £2 12s; rate arrears, £604 10s sd; cemetery arrears, £8 10s; library arrears. 2s 6d. Accounts amounting to £789 12s 9d were passed. Reports for the year ended March 31 stated inter alia:—Eleven building permits were issued, the fees derived therefrOm amounting to £B. The total value of buildings constructed, alterations and additions, amounted to £1866 10s; 186 motor drivers’ licenses were issued, the fees amounting to £46 10s; 42 heavy traffic licenses were issued (fees £287 15s); 86 dog licenses were issued (fees £l9 2s); 38 sundry licenses were issued (fees £7B). The number of library books issued was 3336 and subscribers 84. The total subscriptions and extra book fees collected for the year amounted to £42; 64 new publications were purchased and placed on the shelves of the lending department. It was decided to request several property owners in Parkville to cut back their hedges. The Athletic Club forwarded a cheque for £5O. being the Eketahuna Men’s Committee’s share of the proceeds of the gala day. A letter of appreciation is to be sent to the club for its generous action. It was decided to thank the Pahiatua Patriotic Entertainers and Pahiatua Band for the assistance accorded on the occasion of the sports.
The Mayor stated that he had been approached by the Pahiatua bandmaster to ascertain whether the council would lend the Pahiatua Band several instruments now held by the council. The. Pahiatua Borough Council would be responsible for them. After discussion it was decided to accede to the request. The R.S.A. asked whether the council would make the usual arrangements for the Anzac Day service. The request was agreed to. The Health Inspector (Mr Swain) reported for the quarter ended March 31 as follows: —Notifiable infectious diseases: Once again I am pleased to be able to report a clean bill of health; no cases occurred during the above period, and present indications are satisfactory. Foodshops and eatinghouses: Inspections at all these premises have been made; a good standard is being maintained and where defective conditions have arisen, steps to overcome these have been taken. The present general standard is satisfactory. Building, sanitary plumbing and drainage: A good standard of workmanship is being carried out, with by-laws being adhered to. The foreman (Mr S. Daniel) reported inter alia on the work done during March as follows: —Patching was carried out oh several of the metalled surfaces, including Haswell, Cullen and Macara streets. The sealing was patched on Main Highway No. 860 and Main Highway No. 477 will be attended to. A start has been made with the Newman Road footpaths. The outfall drain at the septic tank was inspected with the Health Inspector and urgent repairs are necessary. Two 12 in. steel pipes are required and a small amount of river protection work is necessary.
