HOME GUARD TEMPORARY PROMOTIONS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The following new Guardsmen have marched into the Company: —Eric Lionel Hooper, Kenneth James Jamieson, Charles W. H. Zabell. The following promotions (temporary) and alterations now operate: Sgt. J. R. de Norville to be Platoon Sgt. No. 6 Platoon. A. H. Knowles to oe L/Cpl. Sgt. C. Porter and L/Cpl. W. W. Bird being' required for essential P. and T. services will be moved to No. 4 Platoon. No. 4 Platoon will be; -—Pt. Cmdr. J. L. Loftus, Pt. Sgt. E. H. Smith. Left Markers: Cpl. P. L. Beere, L./Cpl. W. OBITUARY
MRS M. A. HOPWOOD. There died at Hamilton recently at the age of 89 years, Mrs Mary Ann Hopwood, daughter of the late Mr John Waterson. a New Zealand pioneer who arrived in 1841. The late Mrs Hopwood who was twice married, her first husband being Mr Harry White, was the first white child born in Greytown. Her brother died 3 weeks before her at Franklyn at the age of 86 years. There were two children by the first marriage, Mrs H. Meyrick, of Dalefield, and Mrs Percy Ross, of Eketahuna. Mrs Hopwood s father, Mt John Waterson, kept the first hotel in Greytown which was practically a slab whare thatched with totara bar!:. Ihe members of her second family.are Mesdames E. Welch (Taihape), Pettigrew (Te Kuiti), Smith, Archie Hansen (Hamilton), and Mrs C. Pickhard. Two sons pre-deceased her.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT PARKVALE. The monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute was held in the Parkvale Hall yesterday, Mrs W. Adlam presiding over a large attendance. The meeting took the form of a social gathering and visitors were present from the Carterton Women's Institute. Dalefield-Matarawa Women’s Institute. Carterton League of Mothers and the Carterton Women’s Division. Mesdames W. McKinnon and N. Peacock were appointed delegates to attend the council meeting at Masterton on April 30. An invitation was received from the League' of Mothers to attend their birthday party, and members were appointed to represent the Institute. It was decided to hold a dance on May 24 in aid of Institute funds. Potatoes were weighed in the potato coinpetition, the winner being Mrs. J. Warrington, with 321 b. Afternoon tea was served and then Mrs. Hopkins, of Carterton. delighted everyone by reading their cups, this causing much amusement. Mrs. Hopkins was heartily thanked and presented with a shoulder spray.
Competitions, arranged by Misses M. Stent and M. Adlam were won by Mrs Geo. Steffert and Mrs. J. Luckie. Miss A. Franks and the Misses Luckie (3) were elected new members.
X pianoforte solo was given by Miss M. Stent, folowed by a recitation, ‘’Not Understood," by Mrs. A. Elkins, which was well received. An excellent play entitled, “The Crimson Cocoanut” was given by the Drama Circle and greatly appreciated, those taking part being Misses B. Adlam, H. McKennon. M. Adlam, M. Stent, J. Phelps and Mrs. J. Stubbs. An item, “God Send him Back to me” was nicely rendered by Mrs. N. Peacock and Mrs. C. V. Downes. They then led the audience in singing “There’s a Boy Coming Home on Leave.” A pianoforte duet was played by Miss H. McKinnon and Miss J. Phelps. The monthly competition, judged by ’ Mrs. H. Hodder and Miss Arcus, resulted as follows:—Senior, ginger cake, for Wellington Y.M.C.A.: Mrs. C. Jensen, Junr., 1, Mrs. G. W. Hart 2, Mrs. L. Rayner 3. Best bloom: Mrs. L. Rayner 1, Mrs. J. Rayner 2, Mrs. N. McKinnon 3. Junior: Ginger cake, Miss M. Adlam 1, Miss S. Rayner 2; flowers, Miss S. Rayner 1, Miss H. McKinnon 2. The hostesses, Mrs. R. McKinnon and Mrs. L. Rayner, were assisted by a band of willing helpers. A Bring-and-Buy Stall, in charge of Mrs. W. King and Miss E. Martin, did brisk business. Church Services. Services will be held at St. Mark’s ; Anglican Church tomorrow. On Sun-' ' day there will be the usual Easter services and the offertories on that day will-be handed to the Vicar. A service will also be held at Parkvale at 2 p.m. Masonic Installation. At the annual gathering of St. Mark’s Masonic Lodge the following officers were installed: —1.P.M., W. Bro. Three rinks of Carterton bowlers left today to take part in tournaments which are being held during the Easter holidays at Wanganui. Palmerston North and Wellington. Farewell Gatherinn. At the Carterton School yesterday afternoon two teachers who will go into camp next week were entertained at. afternoon tea by the staff. Mr. W. Martin, headmaster, in a few well
chosen words, referred to the departure of the two teachers and wished them a safe return from their military duties. He then presented hold-alls to Messrs. F. R. Crane and Thos. Harp. The recipients suitably returned thanks. Parkvale Dance and Card Party. A dance will be held in the Parkvalc Hall on Saturday. April 19, in aid of the Patriotic Funds. A euchre tourney will be conducted for non-dancers for which excellent prizes are offered. There is expected to be large attendances at these functions which are to be held fortnightly. Dalefield Dance. The Dalefield Hall should be filled on Easter Monday evening when the Matarawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute will hold a dance. Personal. Miss Marie Priestley, who has been spending a vacation with friends in Carterton. returned to her home in Wellington today.
