FAR EAST DEFENCE
STATEMENT BY ADMIRAL SIR G. LAYTON REINFORCEMENTS ASSURED. IF BALLOON GOES UP IN PACIFIC. (.By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) SINGAPORE, April 9. Vice-Admiral Sir Geoffrey Layton, Commander-in. Chief of the China Station, stated: “If the balloon goes up in the Pacific, we will get powerful reinforcements and get them quickly, regardless of whether the United States comes in with us.” He said he had not received or expected reinforcements for the units at present safeguarding the Eastern sea lanes and the Hong Kong and Singapore bases, but in the event of an emergency units would come quickly enough, and in sufficient strength to permit of effective defensive action, while a full battle fleet could reach Singapore within two months. Admiral Layton expressed the opinion that there would be no difficulty in accomodating any part of the United States Fleet at the Singapore Base.
