RELEASE REFUSED

AXIS SHIPS IN MEXICO.

MINISTER GIVES REASONS.

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Dav, 9.40 a.m.) MEXICO CITY, April 3. The Mexican Foreign Minister. Senor Padilla, rejected last night formal requests from Germany and Italy for the immediate release of twelve Axis merchant vessels seized recently in Mexican ports, made in identical Notes presented by the Italian and German Ministers. Senor Padilla asserted that to withdraw Mexican guards from these ships and place them without restrictions under the authority of their captains would not only involve danger to the security of these vessels, but would be a threat to the safety of Mexican maritime traffic.
