MARTINBOROUGH

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. “ I (“Times-Age” Special.) ' The monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council was held last night, when there were present the Mayor (Mr C. W. Skill), Crs N. Hardie, C. R. Holmes. M. Mulvaney. G. P. Cotter, W. H. Corfield, D. J. Green and T. A. Hamilton. A letter was received from the Swimming Club enclosing a cheque fur £l3 18s sd, with a request that £6 8s 5d be spent in providing a partition in the ladies’ dressing room. The letter was received with thanks, and it was decided that the request be acceded to. The Wairarapa Auctioneers' Association wrote inquiring what style of drinking trough was needed at the saleyards and requesting the council to forward a quotation for the same. The Masterton County Council wrote enclosing £l7O 16s sd, apportionment of the heavy traffic fees. The revenue received since the last meeting totalled £ll9 2s 2d. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £243 17s lid. The Works Committee reported that a timber wall had been erected at the water headworks and that the footpath in Strasburg Street had been sealed. The Town Hall Committee reported that there was considerable borer at the hall. After discussion it was decided to get into touch with a firm regarding a spray. Authority was given to spend up to £25 under the Emergency Precautions scheme. Mr P. C. Beck was appointed returning officer for the municipal elections. The ranger reported having dealt with eleven head of stock during the month. Ic was resolved that appreciation of the retiring clerk’s services be entered on the council’s minute book. The mayor spoke of the unfairness of the patriotic funds quota allotted to this district, which in comparison to its population was altogether too high. In a general discussion the view was advanced that a much more equitable way of collecting patriotic funds would be by a special war tax, which would bear equally on all. The present system, it was stated, was a severe hardship on business people, who naturally suffered by the various patriotic activities, as it reduced the spending power of the community. It was eventually resolved to place the matter before the Patriotic Committee with a request that representations in the matter be made to the proper authority.
