GOLF SEASON

CLUB OPENINGS ON SATURDAY RIVERSIDE. CANADIAN FOURSOME PLAYED. The official opening of the Riverside Golf Club's season took place in perfect weather on Saturday afternoon. The links were in excellent order. There was a large attendance of members and visitors from other clubs. The president, Mr W. J. Palamontain. extended a welcome to the visitors and to new members. He thanked the committee responsible for preparing the links for play. Mr. Palamontain referred to the fact that many club members were on active service and expressed the wish that they would have a safe and speedy return. A Canadian foursome competition was held, the winners being Mrs. G. Brown and Mr. Wehepeihana, with a net score of 75. A putting competition was won by Mrs. M. A. Rawlins. Afternoon tea was served by a ladies’ committee. MAHUNGA IMPROVEMENTS TO LINKS. The Mahunga Golf Club’s season was officially opened on Saturday by the club’s president, Mr. G. H. Perry, who was introduced by the club captain, Mr I. I. McGregor. Mr. Perry remarked on the continued improvement.in the state of the links which reflected great-credit on the club’s greenkeeper, Mr. J. Thornton. A warm welcome was extended to the many visitors present at the links and Mr. Perry expressed the hope that the club would enjoy another" successful season. He presented the trophies to the winners of the mixed fourball competition, which was won by Mrs. R. C. Simpson and G. B. Williams, the runners-up being Miss Cummins and G. B. Young. Mr. J. Robertson, M.P., who was also present, expressed the pleasure which he derived from his visits to the club. He had attended these functions for some years now and could not help but be impressed with the steady improvement in the links. He joined with Mr. Perry in wishing the club every success during the coming season. The many players were subsequently the guests of Mr. Perry at afternoon tea, which was tastefully served by Mrs Thornton, assisted by the ladies’ committee. L. WHAREMOUKU SUCCESSFUL OPENING GATHERING. The official nooning of the Wharemouku Golf Club, which took place on Saturday afternoon, was an outstanding success. Sixty players took part in non-competitive games played over 18 holes. The season was declared opened by the president. Mr J. Broad, who, in an appropriate address, welcomed new players and visitors. Afternoon tea was served. MASTERTON MANY PLAYERS & VISITORS PRESENT. The official opening of the Masterton Golf Club’s season took place on the Lansdowne links on Saturday when there was a large attendance of players and visitors. The best cards handed in for a foursome competition were those of A. R. Clarkson and Dr. J. C. Forsyth, with a score of 51, and Mrs R. R. Burridge and K. D. Duncan 53, Mrs I. Knell and E. Henderson 53.
