MARTINBOROUGU

SUCCESSFUL GALA IN AID OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Favoured by ideal weather, Martinborough excelled itself on Saturday in its endeavour to make up its quota of the patriotic appeal. At an earl}’ hour helpers at the various booths and stalls were astir receiving and displaying produce and goods for disposal. There was a largo attendance of people from all parts of the district. The town was decorated with bunting, and for the evening’s proceedings with strings of coloured lighting. The Masterton Municipal Band was in attendance, and headed the procession, besides playing selections during the afternoon and ’ evening. A section of the mounted men of No. 5 squadron, army service corps, and infantry gave much appreciated displays. The procession was an excellent one, there being no less than 25 floats besides numerous other vehicles. depicting phases of present national events —11.M.5. Leander, a pageant of the Empire, Eastern military operations, Red Cross and nursing aid to wounded soldiers. Every business house and club in the town provided a float, and humorous burlesques on war events were in evidence. Horse races, donkey races, barrel and barrow races, with Maori displays were held. At the close of the evening a large Union Jack was offered at auction and realised about £l5O. Mr Len Harris made the final bid and presented the flag to the Martinborough School. Worthy of mention was the children’s effort in decorated bicycles, tricycles, and prams, which added much to the colourful effect of the procession. The sum of £B5O was netted for the day. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB ADDRESS ON SHEEP DOGS. At the monthly meeting of the Young Farmers’ Club, Mr C. J. McDonald, president of the North Island Dog Trial Association, gave a most interesting and instructive lecture on the training and handling of sheep dogs, specially stressing that kindness and consideration were dominant factors for success, either for use of the dog in everyday work and trials. A dog must be studied and gently handled in its early stages and would eventually respond to good treatment and do the best work, whereas harsh treatment would in many cases break its spirit and render it useless for work. At the conclusion of his address, Mr McDonald answered many questions and was accorded a vote of thanks. Child Receives Burns. Parry Jensen, infant son of Mr.’ and Mrs. L. D. Jensen. Maple Street.
