OF APPROACHING GERMAN RAIDER MR. W. M. HUGHES CONDEMNS NAURU AUTHORITIES. “TREACHERY OR GROSS NEGLIGENCE.” (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CANBERRA, April 1. The Failure of the Nauru authorities to notify vessels ' of the approach of a German raider could be attributed either to treachery or gross negligence, said the Minister of the Navy, Mr Hughes, in the House of Representatives today. Mr. Hughes was commenting on the report of the New Zealand commission. It was obvious that the presence of the raider or that it was within range ol Nauru, was known, which fact, Mi, Hughes emphasised, ought to have been wirelessed to every ship within 1000 miles’ radius of the island. The Acting-Prime Minister, Mr. Fadden, supplemented Mr Hughes’s comment and added that the Commonwealth Government was looking forward to receiving a copy of the New Zealand commission’s report. It was also intended to ask the Nauru administration for a report on the German raid on Nauru. Appropriate action would be taken if circumstances warranted.
