FALL OF MASSAWA
EXPECTED AT ANY MOMENT Italians From Asmara Falling Back On Abyssinian Frontier SIGNS OF DEMORALISATION PERCEIVED BRITISH PROGRESS TOWARDS ADDIS ABABA The fall of Massawa is expected at any moment, a 8.8.0. broadcast states. There is still believed to be an Italian garrison in this important naval base. Most of the Italian forces which evacuated Asmara are retreating to the east and south-east towards the frontier between Eritrea and Abyssinia, away from Massawa. < The Italian forces which abandoned Asmara have become demoralised by the rapid advance of the British forces. Operations in various parts of Abyssinia continue to develop successfully in all areas. It is stated in London that an easy passage into Addis Ababa must not be expected. R.A.F. bombers continue to give active support to the land forces in Eritrea, -and in Abyssinia the South African Air Force has attacked transport, communications and defences. In Tripoli enemy aerodromes have been bombed. One British machine is missing.
