WALTER ABEL

A FINE RECORD. Twenty years in motion pictures is the fine record of Walter Abel. It was while employed as an usher. at the Mertopolitan Opera House in Minnesota that he decided to become an actor. As the first step he took a job as clerk in a drug store. In his spare time he became director, advertising manager, playwright, and actor in one of the amateur theatrical companies there. All the while, he saved his money and eventually made his way to New York to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, While acting in one of the plays there, he was seen by Henry Miller, the producer, and given a job. His first film opportunity came in 1921. when he appeared in Samuel Goldwyn’s “The Malice of the North Wind.” This was followed by “Out of a Clear Sky,” which starred Thomas Meighan and Marguerite Clark. Abel alternated his motion picture appearances with work on the stage and appeared on stage and screen in all parts of America. In 1930 he appeared in “Liliom,” with Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor; in 1933 he was signed by R.K.0., for whom he made eight pictures. Walter Abel is married to Mariette Bitter, noted harpist, and has two young children. His only hobby is golf.
