A serious' shortage of cigarettes and tobacco has become general throughout Britain and there is almost a famine in some districts. Most of the London retailers refuse to sell more than ten cigarettes to each customer ; daily. Queues are seen outside shops.' In north-east England the stocks ofF many shops are lasting only' a few ' hours. A Board of Trade official stated 1 that reduced supplies coincided with i an increased demand throughout the i country as a result of war strain.
