STRIKES IN AMERICAN DEFENCE INDUSTRY MANY OVER RECOGNITION OF UNIONS. WAGES AND CONDITIONS ALSO IN DISPUTE. , (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.' j (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 31. j Congress received an official report today that 22 of the 73 defense strikes < were called solely over union recogni- < tion or jurisdiction, while 21 hinged j purely around wages and working con- j ditions. The remainder involved both j issues. The report was presented by , Mr Vinson, Chairman of the House of j Representatives .Naval Committee. In the total of 73 strikes between j September 8, 1939, and March 2, 1941, , he said, 146,291 employees were involv- j ed in 43 strikes and 1,209,577 man £ hours were lost. Man hour loss reports were not available in the remaining 32 | disputes. The C. 1.0. was involved sole- E ly in 4G strikes and the A.F.L. in 21. c The number for both A.F.L. and-C.1.0. r is listed as six.
