DESTRUCTION OF ENEMY FIGHTER BRITISH PILOT’S DIVE. FOLLOWING MESSERSCHMITT PLUNGES INTO SEA. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) RUGBY. March 31. A Spitfire pilot of the Fighter Command brought about the destruction of an enemy fighter this morning without firing a single shot. The British pilot was flying alone, nearly four miles above the Channel, when suddenly he was attacked by four Messerschmitt 109's, which dived on him simultaneously from all directions. The Spitfire pilot evaded the first concerted attack, and then put the nose of his plane down, and went into a dive of such velocity that the transparent cover of the cockpit was torn away and the goggles whipped off his face. At 4000 feet above the water he eased out of the dive and saw a Messerschmitt, which had been following him down, hurtle past, out of control, plunge straight on and hit the sea with a terrific splash. The Spitfire pilot completed his mission and returned safely to his base, with his ammunition still intact.
