PAUSE IN ATTACK
Italians Heard Firing On One Another DESTROYER CAPTAIN’S PERTINENT QUESTION (Received This Dav, 1.25 p.rn.) LONDON, March 31. It is understood that at least one Australian ship participated in the Mediterranean battle. It is revealed that during’ the action the British held up their attack cn hearing heavy gunfire from the Italians. Presumably they were firing on each other. Junkers 88’s, which appeared over the British Fleet, were unsuccessful in the face ; of a withering fire from the Navy and the skill of the Fleet Air Arm. ' • During the battle Captain Watkins, commander of the destroyer Havoc, sent a message to Admiral Cunningham: “I am hanging on to the stern of the Pola. Shall I board her or blow off her stern with depth charges? We haven’t any torpedoes left.” Admiral Cunningham’s reply is not revealed, but the Pola sank. The British Fleet, in a twelve-hour chase, covered 200 miles.
