HAWKE’S BAY MEETING
SOME SURPRISES. CHIEF EVENT TO LAMBOURN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, March 30. The autumn meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club concluded on Saturday in fine, warm weather. It was the best meeting the club has had for years. The gates showed a very substantial increase and the totalisator returns also were well up, despite two large dividends and another mild surprise. Lambourn brought oil a surprise by winning the principal race the Te Mahanga Handicap, and Hui beat the favourite in the sprint. The hack cup was also won by a comparative outsider’ in Katesbridge, and the win of Lady Garvagh in the maiden event was an outstanding surprise. Despite these reverses the totalisator turnover reached £21,752 10s. This made the total for the two days £36,038 10s. Last year, with one race less each day, the total was £20,938 10s.
