AMATEUR ATHLETICS

EKETAHUNA CLUB SPORTS MEETING ON SATURDAY. SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Eketahuna Athletic Club held its annual sports on the Alfredton Road Domain under ideal weather conditions on Saturday and the fixture proved a great success from all points of view. The attendance was large and the gate takings realised approximately £35. The net proceeds of the meeting are being devoted to the local patriotic ■funds. The Eketahuna and district Mobile Canteen Committee made a special effort during the day, the outcome of which must have proved most satisfactory. A parade of town and country units of the Home Guard was held in the Main Street and headed by the Pahiatua Municipal Band marched to the Domain where a demonstration of marching, etc., was given and this proved very popular with the crowd. Mr O. Walton, company commander, was in charge of the parade. Owing to outside attractions the entries in the athletic events were small, but nevertheless, all the events provided exciting finishes. The motor car events proved very popular and in this section the competition was also keen. Under the capable guidance of Messrs S. Daniel (president), and C. Hausmann (secretary), the various officials carried out their duties very efficiently. The side shows were provided by the 'Pahiatua Patriotic Entertainers who had a most successful time. An afternoon tea canteen was conducted by the Eketahuna Ladies' Committee, and’ this was most popular. An ice cream and sweets stall and a produce stall did excellent business. During the afternoon the Pahiatua Band rendered a short programme of music which was greatly appreciated. The various announcements were made per medium of Mr J. R. Berney's address system. The opportunity was taken during the afternoon Lo auction a flag in aid of the canteen fund. Mr Henderson was the actioneer and the sale resulted in a good sum being realised. Altogether the sports were a decided success and the Athletic Club is to be congratulated on the success achieved. The,following are the results: — ATHLETIC EVENTS. 100 yards local handicap: T.
