FREE KINDERGARTEN

SATURDAY’S BIG CARNIVAL. MANY INTERESTING FEATURES. A movement has commenced in. Masterton for the - institution of a Free Kindergarten for children of pre-prim-ary school age. The strength to which the movement has grown is shown by the efforts af present being made to obtain a suitable building and equipment. To further the project, a carnival has been planned, and on Saturday afternoon next the curtain will rise in the beautiful Wairarapa College grounds on one of the greatest, fun fairs Masterton has seen. Two energetic committees have been working for some time with a view to making the carnival a highlight in the Free Kindergarten Schools campaign. Already the committee has secured a section in the West End area, and plans for a very fine suntrap kindergarten building have been drawn up. The committee is planning already to extend the movement, and is ready to 'do its share to helping in the building of a new world by the training of the young. The broad view of the movement taken by the promoters is evidenced by the unanimous decision of the committee to extend unconditional help to any other section of the community willing to make a move in a similar direction. Saturday's Carnival, beside the usual stalls, sweets and produce booths and sideshows, there will be events of a most extraordinary and novel character. Amateur and professional hair-cutting contests, lawnmower races, a "wonky saw” event, pillow fighting on a horizontal pole, continuous concerts, concert parties under the direction of Solway College and Miss Merle Dickson are fun-making items on the bill of fare, while the children are catered for by a sports meeting under the direction of Miss Allen and Mr. Kennedy, pony and donkey rides, rides on H.M.S. Leander, a huge wheelbarrow derby, and the inimitable Redoubtable Reggie, complete with ancient hansom cab. These are'only a few of the large number of items. The admission charge is only 6d. for adults, while children are to be admitted free. It is hoped the College grounds will be packed to capacity.
