TARANAKI’S CENTENARY
CELEBRATIONS OPENED. GOVERNOR TO PARTICIPATE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 30. Taranaki's celebration of 100 years of European settlement opened today with special thanksgiving services. In the morning, children attended a service in Pukekura Park, and in the afternoon, a citizens' service was held near the memorial to the first settlers, erected on Ngamotu beach, close to where they landed on March 31. 1841. The Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, are visiting New Plymouth for the celebrations. The Prime Minister unveiled a memorial to the Rev. Charles Creed, the first minister of religion in Taranaki, who was waiting on the beach to welcome the arrivals on the William Bryan, the first colonist ship. - Special services were held in all churches. The Governor-General and Lady Newall ' arrived by plane today to participate in the celebrations tomorrow. >
