GALLANT DEED
PERFORMED BY CREW j OF PICKET BOAT
BLAZING AMMUNITION CRAFT TOWED. TAKEN INTO OPEN WATER. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, March 29. The courage of a dockyard picket boat.crew —four men, whose ages total just under 240 years—in towing a blazing boat laden with ammunition clear of other craft in Portsmouth recently is the subject of warmly expressed admiration. The picket boat was under way in the vicinity. The coxswain at once approached and volunteered the services of his boat to the officer on the spot. He took the burning coat in tow, dragged her clear of other craft into open water under a fusillade of exploding ammunition. He was just in time, for hardly had the burning tow been got well away in to the stream than it went up in a heavy explosion, which shook the picket boat and the crew severely, and would undoubtedly have done much damage but for the prompt and courageous action. The picket boat, which was the port admiral's barge at Portsmouth 36 years ago, is intact and the crew continue to do excellent service.
