RED STAR CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual meeting of the Red Star Football Club will be held in the Odd Fellows' Hall. Queen Street, on Monday night at 8 o'clock. The annual report is as follows: — In presenting the annual report for the season 1940 we wish to point out that owing to the difficult conditions brought on by the war our club in conjunction with others under the jurisdiction of the Wairarapa Rugby Union, had not been able through the defection of players, to live up to expectations we had all hoped for. Nevertheless. with the members remaining and the younger players the club carried on. and our supporters were treated to a number of interesting games. Though it was not our fortune to win any championships we felt that the promising improvement shown by some of the lower grade boys showed that the' help given by our coaches was well rewarded. In finishing the year with a credit balance of £l3 9s 9d. this in our opinion was very creditable as it was the club’s wish that dances, etc., and collections that ran counter to Patriotic activities be discontinued for the duration of the war. The club felt that it would like to show some appreciation of services rendered by Red Star players who had left or were about to leave shortly for service with the fighting forces overseas, and with this object in view each one was giver, a "Tiki” as a token of good luck. So far 22 Tikis have been distributed. The club extends its best wishes to these members and is looking forward to their safe return. In the departure of Miss Ivy Shackleton and Mr and Mrs V. Pinkney the club suffered a severe loss because the help given by them to the club has been of the utmost value. Their association with us has been over a very long period. Miss Shakleton had been the head of the Ladies' Committee for a period of thirty years, and the club members deeply appreciate all she has done. The club will sadly miss the services of its popular secretary. Mr Berney Howard, who is at present with the New Zealand Forces in Egypt. In a recent letter received in Masterton he sent, the club his best wishes. The season ahead is going to be a difficult one and we extend a welcome to all Oid players and supporters to help us. Our thanks are due to donors of trophi< supporters for donations and assistance rendered, the coaches, lhe St. .loi n Ambulance Brigade for attention given at all times to injured players and to the Press which has so kindly published a considerable amount of our club news.
