STATE TENANTS
PLACED ON SAME FOOTING AS RATEPAYERS UNDER BILL BEFORE HOUSE. DATE OF LOCAL ELECTIONS FIXED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Tenants of State houses are to be placed on the same footing as ratepayers for the purposes of local elections, according to a clause in the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Bill, which was introduced today. A State tenant is to be entitled to have his name entered on any list or roll of electors as if his name appeared on the valuations roll. Authority is also contained in the Bill for the general elections of all local bodies to be held on the third Saturday in May, and voting by means of a cross is to be used at all local elections and polls in the future. The bill was read a first time and the House rose at 11.20 a.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
