John Elliott Haslop, R.N.Z.A.F.. killed in flying accident. His father is Mi- J. Haslop. Ruakaka, Te Aroha. Sergeant Haslop was born in Canada and educated at the Hamilton High School. Flight-Lieutenant Long, a son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Long, of Masterton, will be remembered for a brilliant feat of aviation in the early stages of the war. In November, 1939, Pilot Officers Grey, of Gisborne. and Long were pilot and navigator respectively of an R.A.F. . machine engaged in night reconnaissance over enemy territory. They ran into atrocious weather, which made control of the machine almost impossible. The wireless was put out of commission and. after the conclusion of the reconnaissance, a perilous flight of over 340 miles over enemy territory and the sea was made and the plane was brought safely back to England. When the machine landed, so little of the fabric was left on the wings that experts wondered how it had kept aloft. Both New Zealanders were awarded the D.F.C.
