ATTACK ON HULL

SOME CASUALTIES CAUSED MANY HOUSES AND SHOPS DESTROYED. DIRECT HIT ON SHELTER. (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, March 19. Hull last night was subjected to an intense air attack, which lasted for several hours. Although the damage to property was considerable, the casualties were not heavy. Eleven persons were killed, including a man, his wife and four children when their shelter suffered a direct hit. The sole survivor was a year-old baby. A home guardsman, attempting to extinguish an incendiary bomb, was killed when it exploded. Many houses and shops were destroyed and two churches were damaged. Incendiaries were showered on a nearby village, but the fires were quickly extinquished. Another north-east coast town was bombed and a number of houses were wrecked. Several persons were injured when explosives landed on a theatre and dance hall. The anti-aircraft barrage in London equalled any since tjie blitz began. Tremendous and concentrated gunfire greeted the raiders, which soon retreated. Four women and three men were killed when high explosives demolished four houses in a London district. A mother and daughter of German refugees were killed when entering their home. A man and his wife next door, when preparing for bed, were killed, but their three children escaped. A bomb made a direct hit on a house in a south-east coast town, killing a mother and two children. A baby in a cot was uninjured, trapped under a beam. A direct hit on a cottage killed a man, his wife and two children. Two six-ton lorry-loads of clothes have been dispatched to Clydeside from Edinburgh.

GERMAN REPORT (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, March 19. A German communique states: “Last night we attacked Hull, causing numerous fires in harbour supply depots. Enemy planes flew over north Germany and bombed coastal towns. Several persons were injured, but the damage was negligible.’ The Berlin News Agency states that 67 persons were killed in the Hamburg raid on March 12.
