WAIRARAPA EXECUTIVE MEETING REMITS FOR CONFERENCE. MEANS TO COMBAT SOCIAL EVILS. A meeting of the Wairarapa executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers Union was held at the Rest Room, King Street, yesterday. . There were present Mrs K. Groves (in the chair), Mesdames Maitland, E. Allen, Ordish (Carterton). J. Andrews. C.' W. Hay (Tinui), E. H. Dagg, J. Wilson, Miss Dagg (Mauriceville), Mesdames D. James, McLachlan (Rangitumau), Beu, Wiggins, Miss Eagar (Greytown), Miss A. S. Anderson (Eketahuna), Mesdames L. R. Grant, A. M. Ross (Pahautea), A. Clark. Wakely (Featherston), Barrel’ (Masterton), D. Simpson (Marton) and A. C. Gawith (Longbush). Regarding Mrs Andrews’s report on housekeeping the secretary showed that the demand for housekeepers had slackened slightly since the last meeting. Branch presidents reported on the activities of their branches showing that in addition to their usual work for the Women’s Division thej r were all busily engaged raising money for the various patriotic funds. The president of the Countrywomen’s Red Cross sub-centre reported that the students attending home nursing classes were now ready to sit for their examination. First aid classes would be starting immediately and would be held at the Women’s Division Rest Room, King Street, every Wednesday between 1 and 2 p.m. Those wishing to enrol should apply next Wednesday, March 26. A discussion took place on the remits for the forthcoming annual conference. These urged: (1) More stringent enforcement of the laws relating to criminal abortion; (2) control of the sale of contraceptives, especially to juveniles; (3)) the indeterminate sentence for cases of criminal assault on young children; (4) greater support of and co-operation with the Farmers’ Union, for example, in their protests against certain provisions of the Small Farms Amendment Act; (5) sympathy with the BritishAmerican co-operation movement; (6) support of education boards authorising schools under their control to begin the day with the Lord’s Prayer. The president was authorised to invite the co-operation of other women’s organisations in Masterton in planning methods of combating certain social evils.
RANGITUMAU BRANCH. COMPETITION RESULTS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Rangitumau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the hall, Mrs James presiding over a large attendance of members. The meeting was opened with the singing of the National Anthem. The result of the bring and buy effort was most satisfactory,, and the proceeds are to help the patriotic fund. On behalf of the members, Mrs James made a presentation of a crystal bowl to Mrs P. P. O’Brien, who was recently married. It was decided to hold a shop day in the Air Raid Shelter on Wednesday, March 19, the proceeds to assist the Air Force Queen. The results of the flower competitions were as follow: Three blooms, Miss Harvey 1, Mrs Duckett 2; single bloom, Miss Harvey 1, Mrs Duckett 2.
