FREE TREATMENT IN WAIRARAPA. HOSPITAL BOARD'S DECISION. A decision to provide free out-pa-tient service at the Masterton hospital was made at a meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board held today. A circular letter was received from the Health Department requesting the board to provide free out-patient service. "Is this what you call passing the buck to the Hospital Board.” asked Mr J. F. Thompson. “ ‘Carrying the bauy, ne means,’.aid Mrs. S. Fletcher. Mr. H. H. Mawley (chairman): “It’s the thin edge of the wedge. It doesn’t affect the hospital very much The few that are treated here cannot pay their fees in any case. It is only a small matter here. In the meantime we should carry on. We have no facilities for dealing with out-patients.” Mr. Thompson; “We haven’t facilities at any of our hospitals.” Mrs. J. Robertson: "It means the board will receive payment from the Social Security Department for outpatients treated. Formerly the board wasn't paid." After a brief discussion it was agreed that the free out-patient’service be instituted and to suggest to the Department of Health that in any future dealings the Department should lay down a scale of fees.
