ARMY QUEEN

COMMUNITY SING LAST NIGHT. OPERA HOUSE PACKED. The visiting community song leaders, Messrs. Frank Crowther and Winston McCarthy drew a capacity house at the Opera House last night, when Army Queen supporters rolled up in full force to give their queen an excellent lift in the carnival. During the evening, the Army Queen flag and the tank w.ere auctioned by Mr. J. Broad, the result being most gratifying, the sum of £624 being raised to swell the funds of the Army -Queen. The flag went to Miss P. Jameson and the tank to Mr. J. Bouzaid. Just prior to the flag being auctioned, “God Save the King,” and “The Star Spangled Banner" were played, the latter as a gesture of goodwill to the United States. The programme went through without the slightest hitch. Numbers of special note included Mr. Crowther's rendition on the piano of a selection of Strauss’s waltzes and "Silver Threads Among the Gold." Miss Olga Burton delighted the audience with hei songs and violin numbers, while Mr. Ken McCauley also received the ovation of the public for his singing. Mr. Winston McCarthy proved himself a capable and humorous leader and held the crowd completely throughout the evening. Special thanks are due to Mrs. Alexander for the arrangement of the stage, the W.F.C.A., Ltd., for the loan of furniture and Mr. J. Bouzaid for the capable way in which he carried out his duties as stage manager. Results of raffles are:—Green set of undies, won by ticket No. 996 L, Mrs. E. M. Allen, Upper Plain.
