V GUARD AND EMERGENCY SERVICE COMPULSORY ENROLMENT URGED. BOROUGH COUNCIL “RECEIVES'’ LETTER. A resolution passed by the Stratford Borough Council urging the adoption of compulsion in respect to service in the Home Guard and the E.P.S. organisation came before the Masterton Borough Council for its consideration at its meeting last night, when a letter from the Town Clerk of Stratford was read to the meeting. The council decided to receive the letter. “Gentleman, what do you think of that?” asked the Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, after the letter had been read to the council. Mr. Jordan added that when he was in Wellington attending a conference which took place a week ago. the Director of National Service told them that the view was still held that the maximum New Zealand might expect in the meantime was a raider. That was still the official view. Councillor G. D. Wilson said that speaking personally, his idea was that such a proposal as the letter put forward should be brought into effect, but he did not know it was the function of the council to express an opinion about it. He moved that the letter should be received. ,
The motion was seconded by Councillor A. D. Low and carried.
