CENTRE CONTEST

CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS GAMES. THIRD & FOURTH ROUNDS. On Saturday two more rounds of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre’s championship pairs contest were decided on the Park green, which was holding a little after the light rain during the latter part of the week. Even so the green was playing exceptionally well, and good bowling was witnessed. In round three Higgison won easily in his game with Williamson, who opened the scoring with one, but did not score again until the 10th end, by •. which time Higgison had scored 17. | This was a big lead, and Williamson did not reach double figures until the 18th end, the game concluding on the following end. Higgison trailed the jack on several occasions, and once again proved accurate with his drives and running shots. In the other game Shearer was defeated by Bloxam, who played good, steady bowls, gaining singles on no less than eleven ends. In round four Greytown drew the bye, and Bloxam played Harrington. This game was full of interest. Harrington opened the scoring with a 2 and a 6, to which Bloxam replied with a 5 and a 2, but was down 15-7 on the 7th end. He took the next six ends with 4,1, 2,2, 2, 1 to lead 19-15 on the 13th end. Owing to a late start, the green was by now a little heavier, and Harrington was inclined to play a shade wide, missing a trail only by inches on several occasions. On the 16th end the score was 21-19 in favour of Bloxam, and again on the 18th end Harrington was only 2 behind. On the last end Harrington wanted 4 to win, but Bloxam managed to draw the shot, and so win his second game of the day. The games will be continued again next Saturday on the same green, when Carterton will meet Greytown in the semi-final. The winners of this game will then play Featherston to decide the 1941 champions. Each team has now one life, and some very keen bowling should be witnessed. The first game will be played at 1 p.m., so that the final should commence not later than 4 p.m. Details of scores are: Dennes and Higgison (Greytown) 29 v Casely and Williamson (Martinborough) 10; Davis and Bloxam (Featherston) 19 v Carr and Shearer (Park) 14; lsavis and Bloxam 27 v Thompson and Harrington (Carterton) 23. The championship fours will be commenced on the Carterton green next Saturday, commencing at 1 p.m., and will be played on the one-life system.
