SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

RED STAR v COLLEGE. A SEVEN WICKETS WIN. The match between Red Star and Wairarapa College was continued on Saturday afternoon. College resumed their innings with 1 wicket down for 40, but could do nothing with the bowling of N. Hoar, who secured 7 wickets for 37 runs, having bowled 11.6 overs, including 1 maiden. In the match he took 13 wickets for 69 runs, an excellent average of 5.4 runs. He took his last five wickets for 8 runs on Saturday. A. Hoar played a splendid innings for 26, including four 4’s and three 2’s. Tier compiled 22 (three 4’s and four 2’s) in good style. Red Star was left with 130 runs to get to win. The College bowling was good and the field well placed and runs came slowly. At 17 Welch bowled Lambourn with a good ball, and at 22 Stevens smartly caught Coleman off his own bowling. Roys and W. Peterson then settled down to take the sting out of the bowling, for no liberties could be taken with the bowling of Welch and Stevens. Runs came, mostly in singles, with an occasional four, the placing of the field saving many hits which would have otherwise reached the boundary. At 95 Roys was given out 1.b.w., after having compiled a very useful 45 which included three 4’s and a 3. A change of bowling was made at this stage, Donnelly replacing Stevens who had sent down 15 overs in succession for 4.1 runs and 1 wicket. N. Hoar joined W. Peterson and the latter was dropped in the outfield off Donnelly’s first ball. Newman Hoar opened up play, and Taylor relieved Welch at the other end, the latter having sent down 17 overs in succession for 52 runs and 2 wickets. He kept a good length all the time and was the more difficult bowler to play. Hoar and Peterson set out after the necessary runs, the latter making the winning hit fiftyfive minutes before the call of time. Peterson played excellent cricket, giving only one chance and registering 50. He hit two boundaries, 32 of his runs being singles, a tribute to the bowling and to the placing of the field. N. Hoar batted freely for 17, including a 4. Red Star thus won by 7 wickets and 2 runs. Scores: — RED STAR. First Innings ...'. 78 Second Innings.
