LANCE-CORPORAL HARRY NICHOLLS, of the Grenadier Guards, a Bren-gun blazing from his hip, ran forward and put three German machine-guns out of action. Then, wounded four times, he carried on and attacked the infantry. As he came back a stray shell dropped near him, and Lance-Corporal Nicholls was dead—a hero whom Britain has rewarded with her highest honour, the Victoria Cross.
