4 TRENTHAM MILITARY BAND VISITS MASTERTON DISPLAY BY INTERHOUSE GIRLS FROM HUTT. ENTERTAINMENT IN THE PARK AND ELSEWHERE. There was a large attendance of the public at the Masterton Park on Saturday afternoon when a splendid entertainment was presented by the Army Queen committee. Although the sky was heavily overcast the rain helf off and conditions were very pleasant. Headed by the Wairarapa College Pipe Band, the visiting Trentham Military Band, the local Territorials, the visiting Hutt Interhouse girls' teams, followed by the Masterton Municipal Band and teams representing the Wairarapa Interhouse Girls' Association paraded through Queen Street to the Park. The crowd lining the streets frequently applauded the girls for their high standard of marching. Following the ceremony of saluting the Union Jack, a selection was played by the Trentham Band. Keen interest was taken by the public in a drill and rifle exercises competition among teams from the local Territorial units for a silver cup donated by the R.S.A. All teams showed remarkable precision in their work and received wellmerited applause. The president of the Wairarapa Interhouse Association, Mr L. B. Maunsell, extended a welcome to the visiting girls and the Trentham Band. After a parade of all the Interhouse girls a display of marching was given by the following teams: Griffin’s, Petone. Palmolive, Y.M.C.A.. Cody's. State Kitchenette and W.F.C.A., the last three teams representing the local Interhouse Association. The highlight of the afternoon was a display of block marching given by 64 Masterton girls. The manoeuvres proved most popular with the public. A team of R.S.A. “girls" provided the public with many humorous interludes. Music for the marching was provided by the Municipal Band, the College Pipe Band and the Trentham Band. The programme concluded with iXselection by the Trentham Band. Queen Street was lined with spectators on Saturday night when a procession was the attraction. Applause was freely given at several points. The Army Queen, Miss Marion Holdsworth, led the procession on a charger, followed by the Trentham Military Band, visiting Hutt and local Interhouse girls and a team of R.S.A. “girls.” DANCE IN MUNICIPAL HALL. The Masterton Municipal Hall was well filled on Saturday night when between seven and eight hundred patrons attended a dance held in aid of the Army Queen. Music was supplied by Te Tail’s Orchestra and the Trentham Military Band. The Trentham Band Orchestra, which consisted of Lance-Corporal Parnell (pianist), Bandsmen Giles (saxaphone-trumpet), Ratcliffe and Winnie (drums) proved popular and was repeatedly encored. Novelty dances were hold and items were given by Bandsman Les Andrews and Miss R. Kirkup. Mr J. Bruce was M.C. A special buffet supper was served. The function proved an outstanding success. SUNDAY CONCERT.
There was a good attendance of the public at the Masterton Park yesterday to hear a band concert given by the visiting band. Although the weather was threatening rain held off. The band was officially welcomed by Mr T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, and Mr J. Robertson, M.P. Included among the guests of the Army Committee were the Air Queen, Miss Jose Hosking. the Navy-Nursing Queen, Miss Barbara Barton and the Princess Royal. Miss Audrey Burling. The band was heard to advantage in several selections and received an excellent hearing. For the first time in Masterton a ceremonial military retreat was presented by the band. The Army Committee wishes to thank the Solway-Manaia Women’s Institute for providing luncheon at the Town Hall on Saturday, the Municipal Band, Trentham Military Band, Territorials, R.S.A. “girls.” and the Masterton County Council (for transport).
