MOVING OF SHRUBS

DO THE WORK NOW. If you wish to remove evergreen shrubs or trees during the course of alterations, there is no better time for the work than the present. The trees will have time to become established before the winter. The way to succeed is to prepare the holes in advance filling the whole with water. Also soak the roots as the tree is being planted. The soil should be trodden firmly the following day. Trees six to eight feet in height can be successfully moved' at this season by following this method. If the soil is dry, water the trees thoroughly the day before they are taken up. The roots will then remain covered with soil. Rhododendrons are easy to move because the roots are in a compact ball. Other evergreens suitable for early autumn transplanting are Yews. Veronicas. Azara microphylla, Ceanothus Veitchianus. Viburnums, Heaths of all types and the evergreen kinds of Berberis if they are small; it is difficult to transplant large bushes of these latter.
