TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

| MASTERTON ACTIVITIES ANNUAL MEETING. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The fifth annual meeting of the Masterton Townswomen's Guild was held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall yesterday afternoon. „ The vice-president, Mrs Judd, presided over a large attendance of members and visitors. The meeting opened with the singing of the New Zealand Anthem, then the Ode, and the reciting of the Aspiration and a Prayer for Peace. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mrs Watson. The annual report and balance sheet for the past year were adopted. Members were requested to help at functions in connection with the Free Kindergarten. Bouquets were presented to Mesdames Bennett (retiring president) and Judd for presiding over the meetings during the year. Shoulder sprays were presented to Mesdames Henderson (a visitor from Solway-Manaia Institute), Lyttle (the retiring treasurer) and Taylor (secretary). Mrs Judd thanked members who assisted the Guild’s effort in connection with the Navy-Nursing Queen. The treasurer stated the amount handed over was £65 3s 2d. Committee members were also thanked for their work during the year, and also all Circle leaders. Afternoon tea was then served. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs E. J. Burke; secretary, Mrs S. F. Taylor; treasurer. Mrs S. Copp; committee, Mesdames Anstice, Brown. Dixon. Day, Duckworth, Morton. Snowsill, Walker and Whittaker. The competition resulted as follows: Sultana cake. Mrs S. F. Taylor 1. Mrs Davis-Goff 2, Mrs Donovan 3. Knitted tea cosy, Mrs Donovan.

The tatting donated by Miss Deal was won by Mrs L. Page, High Street. A humorous sketch, entitled “Noblesse Oblige,” was given by Mesdames Brown and Whittaker and was thoroughly enjoyed. “Land of Hope and Glory” was sung by members of the musical circle, and was much appreciated, the accompaniment being played by Mrs J. Y. Douglas. In connection with the cake donated by Mrs Butler for patriotic purposes, it was unanimously decided that it be handed over to the depot of the NavyNursing Queen. The meeting closed with the singing of the Ode and the National Anthem. The annual report stated that the year closed with 115 financial members, with an average attendance at each meeting of about 80. Fourteen new members were elected during the year. The financial position of the guild was satisfactory. During the year the guild had carried out considerable work of a patriotic characten.
