FEATHERSTON

WOMEN'S INSTITUTE MEETING AT KAHUTARA. (“Times-Age" Special.) The annual meeting of the Kahutara Women's Institute was held yesterday afternoon when Mrs McKenna presided over a good attendance. Mrs Jolly, president of the Martinborough Women’s Institute, and Mesdames Boyd, Beveridge and Miss Hibberd were welcomed as visitors. The balance sheet and report were adopted. The president read her report of the year’s work and thanked members for their cp-operation during the past year. Mrs McKenna, having retired from the presidency, Mrs Jolly took the chair for the election of officers. The following officers were . elected: —President, Mrs Elbe; vice-presidents, Mesdames Duffy and Corlet; secretary, Mrs McKenna; treasurer, Miss Dymes; committee, Mesdames Rogers, Harland, Pottenger, Henderson, T. Hood, Humphries, R. Fenwick and J. Sinclair; press correspondent, Mrs Pottinger; librarian, Mrs Humphries. Mrs Jolly presented the competition prizes won for the year. The points prize went to Mrs D. Wilson for the best bloom and to Mrs Pope for the most entries made during the year. Mrs Rogers and Miss Dymes were appointed delegates to attend the Federation meeting in Masterton in April. The competitions resulted as follows:—Best gingerbread: Miss Money, 1; Mrs Pope. 2; Mrs Duffy, 3. Best bloom: Mrs Pope. 1; Mrs Elbe and Mrs Fenwick, 2. The gingerbread is to be sent to the Whatman Home, Mastert|on. The hostesses were Mesdames Henderson and D. Wilson and Misses Dymes and Money. Little Girl Injured. A girl nine years of age, Norma Delegate, injured a leg when she fell in the baths on Sunday. Her leg was caught between a pipe and the side of the baths, She was taken to the Greytown Hospital for treatment. Epitaph on Tombstone. In' a letter received in the recent English mail the following epitaph from a tombstone 500 years old in Sussex was enclosed: “When pictures look alive with movements free;, and ships like fishes swim beneath the sea; when men outstripping birds shall cleave the sky; then half the world deep drenched in blood shall be.” Red Cross Society. The attendance at the Red Cross Society’s classes continues to be good. The students are taking a keen interest in the lectures. Last evening Mr J. E. Willett lectured on food. Brownies Enrolled. On Monday afternoon seven Brownies, in charge of Acting Brown Owl J. Sharp, were enrolled by the District Commissioner, Mrs J. C. Bidwill. They were: Diana Varnham, Helen McKain, Joan Merwood, Gay Mclvor, Joy Crawford and Judith Kilsby.
