IMPROVEMENT IN AUSTRALIA

Unemployment in Australian trade unions, which have reported to the Commonwealth Statistician, was 6.2 per cent for the quarter ended December 31. It was the lowest percentage since 1927, when it fell to 5.9 per cent. The number of persons employed in Australian factories in November. 1940. was 37.3 per cent greater than in the pre-war year, 1938-39. The lowest level of unemployment recorded was in 1911 when the figure was 4.7 per cent.
