Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Newall returned tp Wellington yesterday morning by the inter-island steamer after their first official visit to Christchurch. The Hon. P. K. Kaikea, representative of the Native race on the Execu-• tive Council, returned to Wellington by the Limited yesterday from the Tauranga. Coromandel and Hokianga districts.
Mr A. Fellow, chief postmaster in Wanganui for the past two years, has been appointed chief postmaster in Wellington. Mr D. McCowatt, Ney Plymouth, will succeed Mr Fellow in Wanganui.
The funeral of the late Mr P. Minifle took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. Services were conducted by Major C. C. Neeve, of the local Salvation Army Corps. The pall-bearers were members of the South African War Veterans’ Association, Messrs S. Fletcher, J. Dolan. A. H. Marsh, H. M. Boddington and H. Munro. Included in the floral tributes were wreaths from the State Kitchenette Wairarapa Interhouse Girls’ Association and E. Anstice and staff.
At the annual meeting of the Wellington District Law Society the following officers were elected: —President, Mr D. G. B. Morison (Lower Hutt); vice-president, Mr A. B. Buxton; treasurer, Mr T. P. Cleary: council, Messrs J. R. E. Bennett, H. R. Biss, S. J. Castle, P. B. Cooke, K.C., A. M. Cousins, E. P. Hay, D. Perry, W. P. Shorland, J. Graham (Feilding), R. McKenzie (Masterton), J. W. Rutherfurd (Palmerston North); delegates to council of New Zealand Law Society, Messrs D. G. B. Morison, H. F. O'Leary, K.C., G. G. G. Watson.
The death has occurred in Napier of Mr William Robert Moss, at the age of 58 years. Born in Stratford, London, Mr Moss came to New Zealand 30 years ago and entered business on his own account as a blacksmith in Napier. He remained there till the 1931 earthquake, when he went to Ohinewai,. Auckland, and took up farming, remaining there till two years ago, when he went back to Hawke’s Bay, living in retirement in Taradale.
The intention of the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, a former Prime Minister of New Zealand, to. retire from politics after the present session of Parliament has been conveyed to the National Party. Mr Forbes has represented Hurunui electorate since 1908 in the House of Representatives. He has expressed his wish to retire if a suitable man can be found to take his place. His wish has been conveyed in writing to the Hurunui electorate committee, which has deferred consideration of his retirement. Mr Forbes is the third of the Opposition members of the present Parliament to announce his retirement from national politics. The others are Sir Alfred Ransom (Pahiatua) and the Hon. J. G. Cobbe (Manawatu). Two Government members, the Hon. W. Lee Martin (Raglan) knd Dr. D. G. McMillan (Dunedin West) have also announced their retirement from political life.
