FIJI ISLANDERS

BEFORE BRISTOL POLICE COURT. WAR BONUS GRANTED. (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) LONDON. March 10. Dressed in Marlborough blazers, old school ties and other second-hand garments, twenty-one Fiji Islanders appeared in the Bristol Police Court, charged with refusing to put to sea. The Islanders signed on in Sydney and complained of a refusal to grant them a war bonus, though they were undertaking great risks. Shipping representatives agreed before the Magistrate to grant them 30s bonus monthly. The Magistrate sentenced the Islanders to one day's imprisonment'.
