HOMING PIGEONS

MASTERTON CLUB. RACE FROM WAIPAWA. In the Masterton Homing Pigeon Club race from Waipawa (85 miles airline) on Saturday for second Hamper young birds, only two birds homed in race time. Altogether the weather was good apart from a stiff wind and visibility was good, the first bird, J. Mayes's Red Chief, took 3 hours 30 minutes 25 seconds, to defeat W. Steer's bird by 10 yards per minute. Most of the birds were home by Sunday night, and it will be interesting to see how the two birds go in the future. The following is the results: — J. Mayes”s Red Chief, 610 yards per minute, 1; W. Steer's Rolls Royce, 600 yards per minute, 2. The members heartily congratulated J. Mayes on his first win. In the points competition R. Stewart is still first with 30 points, and I. Mayes second with 25 points, although neither gained a place in Saturday's race. The event next week will be a team's race from three points—Dannevirke, Waipawa and Napier. Each member will send one bird to each point. The average time of the three birds will be taken and the best average will win. This method adds interest to the racing as one member might get two birds home in excellent time and lose with his third while another member's birds might do only medium time and yet win.
