WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS, INTERESTING PLAY ON SATURDAY. The Wairarapa Cricket Association’s championship matches were continued on Saturday afternoon in fine weather and with the wickets in good order. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP RED STAR v.' COLLEGE. The Red Star and Wairarapa College teams commenced a match on the College ground which will have an important bearing on the championship. At the end of the day's play conditions were decidedly in favour of the College eleven. Batting first, College found the bowling of N. Hoar and Coleman difficult to play, their total only reaching 117. A. Hoar played a steady innings for 39 which included four 4's and a 3. He showed proficiency in a number of strokes most of his runs being obtained by neatly executed strokes which would have done credit to a much more experienced batsman. Tier played steadily and confidently and provided an inspiration for his team. His runs were mostly made by singles, but he notched a couple of boundaries. Stevens (10) was the only other double figure scorer. N. Hoar bowled with considerable effect send, ing down 9.1 overs, including two maidens, for 6 wickets and 32 runs, an average of 5.4. Coleman (3 for 31) also shaped well with the ball, sending down 10 overs.

Red Star started disastrously—Lambourn, Roys, Hatch and Coleman being out with the score at 18 —and ended in a like manner, only reaching 78, of which Paterson was responsible for 14 off the bat in a last wicket stand. N. Hoar reached 25 by neat batting, but the field wap so placed that he could not register a boundary, all his Funs except a 3 and a 2, being singles. W. Peterson also played a good bat for 20 which included two 4’6. Red Star's low score was chiefly due to the excellent tactics of the College captain, J. Tier, who has produced the best College eleven ever recorded in the cricket history of the Wairarapa. His tuition, example and comradeship with his youthful team has produced confidence, and inspired the team to do its best this season which is better than any other College team has done. Tier had his team skilfully placed so as to save boundaries, relying on his two splendid bowlers in Stevens and Welch, and in the smartness of the fieldsmen. That this policy was successful was evident by the low scoring, only four boundaries being scored in the innings, two by Paterson and one each by Coleman and W. Peterson. Stevens was in great form with the ball sending down 12 overs for 38' runs and 7 wickets, an average of 5.4. Welch bowled 12 overs also for 39 runs and 3 wickets. Stevens took a brilliant catch in the slips in disposing of Hatch. In their second strike College has 40 up for 1 wicket. Scotes: — WAIRARAPA .COLLEGE. First Innings. Schofield, lbw b Coleman 3 A. IN OTHER CENTRES Wellington: Though conditions were ideal for run-getting in Wellington on Saturday, the only senior club team which took advantage of the opportunity was Wellington College Old Boys, who made light of the 335 set them by University, and piled up 486 for seven wickets before applying the closure. Centuries were scored by J. R. Lamason and D. Alexander. Old Boys then dismissed the students, who were three men short, for 76 runs in their second innings, and scored an 8-point win by an innings and 75 runs. ■ Kilbirnie tightened their grip on the championship by beating Institute Old Boys by an innings and 12 runs. Kilbirnie scored 207, and dismissed Institute for 99 and 96. An extraordinary afternoon’s cricket resulted in what has been set down provisionally as a tie in the match between Hutt and Midland at the Hutt Recreation Ground. Midland scored 156 and 155 and Hutt 146 and 165. There were discrepancies between the two scorebooks in Hutt's second innings and the books have been referred to the association for’ a decision. Karori secured their first outright win of the season when they defeated Wellington by 35 runs. With a lead of 77 runs on the first innings Karori looked to have thrown away Iheir prospects of victory when they were dismissed for 147 m the second innings, leaving Wellington with 225 runs to get to win in just under three hours. At one stage Wellington appeared to have the game within their grasp with 120 up for the loss of two wickets, and 140 up for four, but the rest of the team slumped and the whole side was out for 190. In the veterans' cricket match, Wellington beat Auckland in the first innings by 326 runs to 280.
