ALFREDTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Tinges-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Alfredlon Women's Institute was held on Friday. The meeting was opened with the Ode, the singing of "God Defend New Zealand." and the Prayer for Peace. The annual report and balance sheet were read. The retiring president, Mrs S. Edmonds. the secretary. Mrs S. Napier, the treasurer. Miss J. Algie, and the executive delegate. Mrs Weston, were the recipients of beautiful shoulder sprays and bouquets. These were presented by Mi-s G. Napier, in appreciation of their work during the year. The prizes for the year were won as follows: Best bloom competition (prize donated by Mrs G. Napier), Mrs Dickens 1. Mrs Seymour 2, Mrs Hutchings 3. Competitions, Mrs E. McLean 1. Mrs Seymour 2, Mrs Dickens and Mrs Edmonds 3. Mrs McLean has now won the cup outright. Mrs Edmonds welcomed the incoming president, Mrs Hull, and thanked the secretary and treasurer for their help during the past year. Two new members were welcomed — Mrs Higginson and Mrs J. Mackay. The competitions during the afternoon resulted: Best bloom, Mrs Seymour 1, Mrs G. Napier 2. Mrs Hutchings 3. Bed socks to be sent to the Red Cross Society: Mrs Dickens 1, Mrs C. McLean 2, Mrs Hutchings 3. Ginger nuts (these are to be sent to the soldiers overseas), Mrs G. Napier 1, Mrs H. Percy 2, Mrs E. McLean 3. Letters of appreciation were received from Pte Allen Smith and Pte R. Kebbell for parcels received from the Institute. An invitation was received from the Hukanui Women's Institute for members to attend their ’birthday party on Thursday. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames, Rolls, F. McLean, and A. Napier. The fortnightly "games night" was held, on Saturday evening and conducted by the Patriotic Society. The winners in the games were: Ladies. Mrs Harcombe 1, Miss E. McLean 2; men. O. Walker 1, S. Edmonds. B. Seymour and W. Rolls 2. S. Edmonds won the draw. A baby’s frock donated by Mrs F. G. Lewis was won by Mr F. Noictloff. The island costume given by Mr C. Taverner was won by Mrs R. Kebbell and was re-sold to Mr Thomasen. The cabbage given by Mr M. Godinagh realised 10s 9d. Flowers given by Mrs R. Kebbell brought 16s and cucumbers donated by Mrs Weston 3s 3d. A box of pears given by Mr G. Napier realised 12s 6d. Mrs E. W. Mackay donated £l. The total sum realised for the evening was £7 15s 9d. The hostesses were Mrs R. Kebbell,; Miss B. Edmonds and Miss Turton. Home Guard Parade. There was a very good attendance at the Home Guard parade at the Domain on Saturday. Personal Items. Miss J. Rolls, of Wellington is spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Rolls. Mrs Kennedy, of Auckland, is visiting her sister, Mrs S. George. Mrs W. Edmonds is an inmate of the Palmerston North hospital and is progressing favourably. Mr B. Luoni and Private W. Luoni, of Hunterville. have been visiting relations in this district. Messrs G. Godinagh. lan McDonald and Duckett are on leave from the Foxton Territorial camp. ■
