WAIRARAPA CENTRE PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. Saturday proved another ideal day for bowling, when the champion of champion games in the pairs were commenced on the Park green, which was in excellent condition, a factor which must be very gratifying to the ground committee and caretaker responsible. The competition is being played on the two life system, and some very fine bowling was witnessed by the many interested bowlers, who were present. The majority of the games were notable for the compactness of practically every head, when the moving of the jack or a bowl meant a big alteration in the score, thus accounting for the preponderance of big scores, which were not altogether any indication of the games, for the heads would change often during the playing of an end. Another outstanding feature of the games was the general excellence of the leading and the leads are to be congratulated on their performances. The young Carterton skip. F. Harrington played with much more confidence than he did'in the singles, and won both his games comfortably. H. R. Bloxam. of Featherston. played .very good bowls' in his second game. There was not a great, amount of driving. ..for in many cases' this, proved disastrous, although W. Higgison. of Greytown, was generally very accurate and able to take out bowls cleanly. The teams participating were: A. Casely and G. Williamson (s) .Martinborough; T. B. Davis (Robinson sub.) and H. R. Bloxam (s), Featherston; F. Dennes and W. Higgison (s), Greytown: H. Carr and J. Shearer (s). Park; A. Thompson and F. Harrington (s),| Carterton; D. Thompson and W. Christian (s), Masterton. In the first round Williamson scored a comfortable win over Bloxam, who was unable to find the green and scored on only five ends. Christian, who suffered his only defeat in the singles against Harrington, again went down to this player. Christian opened Hie scoring with a single, but Harrington took the next five ends with 1. 3. 2.5, and 5. to make the score 16-1 in his favour at the 6th end. Christian replied with 3. 1, and 3, but from then on Harrington again took charge to win by a comfortable margin. Higgison played very steadily in his game with Shearer and led 6-1 at the 4th end, but Shearer then scored 1. 3 and 2 to take the lead 7-6 on the 7th end and remained on this number for seven successive ends, whilst Higgison took his score to 15 on the 13th end. On the remaining eight ends Shearer scored 5 and Higgison 4.

In the next cround there were two surprises, when Bloxam reversed his score of the first round, and Williamson, after winning by a big margin in* the first, went down by almost as big a margin in this round. The details of the scores are:— Round 1: Harrington (Carterton) 31. Christian (Masterton) 16; Williamson (Martinborough) 30. Bloxam (Featherston) 10; Higgison (Greytown) 19, Shearer (Park) 12. Round 2. Harrington 26. Williamson 12; Bloxam 30. Higgison 18: Shearer 21, Christian 16. At the conclusion of the day's play five teams are left in. viz., Carterton) with two lives, and Park. Greytown. Martinborough. Featherston with one life each. The games will be continued on the Park green next Saturday, when Bloxam will meet Shearer, and Williamson will meet Higgison in the third round. Carterton having the bye. The attention of a all players is drawn to Rule 12 of the N.Z.B.A. Rules (governing tournament, play) which states: "The player at moment of delivery must, have at. least one foot on the mat. and wholly within its boundaries, such foot not to be less than three inches from the front of the mat." Next Saturday's games should prove very interesting and no doubt followers of the game will be looking forward to seeing some first class bowling.
