WELFARE LEAGUE
MEETING OF MEMBERS. PATRIOTIC EFFORTS. _ The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held at the Midland Hotel yesterday afternoon. Those present were: Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames S. Fletcher, R. C. Drummond, L. Hunter, A. W. McKenzie, F. Reynolds, S. Coradine, S. N. Kilgour and S. L. P. Free. Apologies for absence were . received from Mesdames T. Jordan, R. Whyborn, G. H. Collie. H. P. Glen, E. J. Coleman, H. E. Pither, W. Andrew, S. J. Munn, Misses Guild, Vallance and Boddington. Mrs K. Groves, president of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, was a visitor to the League and was warmly welcomed by Miss Kummer. The .members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy to Miss Kummer and Mrs A. W. McKenzie in their recent bereavements. Mrs McKenzie reported on cases assisted during the last few months, groceries and clothing being given were needed. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs P. Welch for a large supply ol clothing which was much appreciated. A pair of shoes and boots were asked for and were promised by members nt the meeting. Mesdames Hunter, Drummond and Kilgour reported on visits to the hospital during January and February. Fruit, flowers, cakes and literature had been distributed with the usual teas to No. 6 ward every fortnight. The arranging of visitors for March were left to Miss Beiliss, convenor of the hospital committee. Mrs Pither reported that many orders were going through to the Blind Institute. Letters of were received from Miss Barnett, matron of the Public Hospital, Masterton; Miss L. Higginson, matron of the Buchanan Home, and a patient in Ward 6 of the Masterton Hospital. A letter was received from Curvier Lighthouse gratefully acknowledging literature received. The secretary reported that application for a donation had been sent to T. G. McCarthy Trust and the J. R. McKenzie Trust. It was decided on the motion of Mrs Fletcher and seconded by Mrs Hunter, that the Welfare League object to the amount of gambling rife in connection with the Queen Carnival, and request the committees to restrict it. The League thanked the following donors for gifts of clothing and reading matter: —The late Mrs Scott's family, Mesdames Astridge, Hoar, and Keltic. It was reported that the bridge party held on February 10 in aid of the Navy-Nursing Queen resulted in £l3 being collected. The shop day held on March 5 produced £l9. These we felt to be very successful efforts and all members and friends were thanked for their assistance.
