FOOD SITUATION
FRANK EXPOSITION MADE. MORE PRODUCE DEMANDED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. March 5. A frank exposition of the food situation and the vital need for farmers to produce every possible ounce of food from the land was made in a speech by the Minister of Agriculture. Mr Hudson. who explained that in the past 20 years stock farmers had relied very largely on imported feeding stuffs and failed to supply their own. "Supplies of feeding stuffs available are below demand," he said, "anif an even furlher reduction in the ration below the 50 per cent cut coming into operation on April 1 must be expected. As much grassland as possible must be put under the plough. These I two factors will mean a reduction in tile number of livestock it will be possible to feed adequately. “Whereas a cutting down is asked for in Illis direction, expansion is necessary in providing crops of human food from the land. For this purpose tlie Government has guaranteed to purchase the entire onion and carrot crop at a price which might be said to be generous."
