CARTERTON

BOWLING PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. ("Times-Age” Special.) Inst evening a game was played on the Carterton green to decide the champion pair of the club between Reg. Thompson and F. Harrington (s), 2 lives, and C. Larsen and C. H. Barber (s), one life. The game ended in favour of the former pair by one point, the scores being 18/17. The winners are to 'be. congratulated on going through the competition without a loss. This pair put up a similar performance last year being undefeated in club games. Club members will wish them similar luck in the Centre games. Keen interest is being taken in a pairs competition which, is being held among the lady members .of the Carterton Bowling Club. So far two games have been played and more are to follow. The ladies are showing a weekly improvement in their play. It is stated that they will shortly play a match against Island Bay ladies' club at Island Bay.

LANCE-CORPL. J. MILNE ENTERTAINED AT PARKVALE. There was a large attendance at the Parkvale Hall last evening when the settlers of the district entertained Lance-Corporal J. Milne who is on leave from camp. A very pleasant time was spent in dancing to excellent music supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s dance orchestra. Much appreciated extras were played by Mrs H. Bain, Miss L. Hopkins. Sergeant L. Martin and Private B. Carmine. The duties of M. were capably carried out by Mr Dan Jensen. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr R. Tagmar and Miss L. Hopkins, and a spot waltz by Miss S. Rayner and Mr Watkins. .Mr C. Jensen, at a suitable interval, said that they had gathered together to entertain Lance-Corporal Milne. Everyone was proud that still another resident of the district had answered the call of duty and all knew that their guest would uphold the best traditions of his country. On behalf of those present and the residents of Parkvale and district he had pleasure in handing their guest a watch. On behalf of the Young Farmers’ .Club, Mr J. Rose handed Lance-Cor-poral Milne a silver cigarette case, and in doing so wished him the best of good luck. Mrs D. Adams, president of the Parkvale Women’s Institute, presented Lance-Corporal Milne with several knitted comforts after which those present lustily sang "For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” The recipient suitably replied. Apologies for absence were received from Dr. and Mrs Milne (Hutt) and Mr F. Court (Waihakeke). Dancing was continued till the early hours of 'the morning and was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem.

Carterton Races.

Considerable interest is being taken in the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club to be held on the racecourse at Clareville on Saturday. The stewards are sparing no pains to make the meeting a success from every point of view and it is fully anticipated that there will be a large attendance, The course is in excellent order and the surroundings are looking at their best. A special train will run from There will be a single pool totalisator and soldiers in uniform will be admitted free. The first race will start at 12.15 p.m. Carterton business premises will close at 11 o’clockPersonal Items. Mrs Guy Booth and her daughter, of Pahautanui, are visiting Carterton, and are staying with Mrs Booth's mother. Mr and Mrs J. Woods, of Park Road, Carterton, will leave this week for the Marlborough Sounds where they will spend a holiday. Mrs Treweek, of Greymouth, is staying with her sister, Mrs Manley, Pembroke Street, Carterton. She will leave at the weekend for Palmerston North on her return to Greymouth. Mr J. Finn win leave at the weekend to attend the annual conference of New Zealand Fire Brigades, which will be held at Blenheim next week. Nurse Entertained. Residents from all parts of the district were present at the Belvedere Schoolroom last evening when Staff Nurse Jean Bond was entertained. The time was spent in dancing to music supplied by Mrs L. Rogers, of Dalefield, extras being played by Miss Benge (Masterton) and Mr A. Morris (piano accordeon). Mr A. E. Reid made an efficient M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won 'by Miss Knowles and Mr L. Quinn. Vocal I items were given by Messrs Ardrie, W. \ Routhan and members of the Carter- ' ton Savage Club quartette, Mr L. » Darke playing the accompaniments. During the evening, Mr A. H. Cal- \ lister, chairman of the Belvedere Dairy ’■ Company, said that Miss Jean Bond * had been,born in and had spent most ' of her school days in the Belvedere district. He was sure she would airways be found doing her duty behind Ithe lines in a military hospital tending •to wounded and sick soldiers. On be- ’ half of the residents of the district he had pleasure in asking the guest to ac■cept a very handsome camera. He Ihoped that she would return to the district covered with honours. The -singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” followed. Nurse Bond suitably ’ Veplied. H Supper was provided by the ladies of ', c district. Dancing was kept up un'l after midnight, the gathering breaker up by the singing of "Auld Lang lie.”
